The history of the building

The history of our estate in Radebeul and what are now the holiday homes goes right back to the 18th century. Back then, Oberlößnitz, with the princely estate of Hoflößnitz and its surrounding vineyard buildings, was one of the most impressive wine-growing areas near Dresden.

At the start of the 18th century the simple winegrower's house with its vaulted cellars, then situated on the main street on the hill, was revamped to create the three-winged farmhouse which still makes such an impression today. The grower's house was lengthened, adding new barrel vaulting, which links up with the older vaulting to create our tasting cellar for home-grown wines. After intensive research, in 2006 we reconstructed the illusionist painting on the wine-grower's house. It reflects the design of the façade after the building was extended in around 1735. At about the same time some simple servants' quarters was built immediately next to it, this time with their own separate cellar; this is where we make our wines.

In the Biedermeier period of 1815-48, when increasingly large numbers of people were interested in buying land and vineyards outside the town, the modern manor house was built to the east of the farmhouse by a Leipzig merchant. He also had the magnificent coach house built, which today of course no longer houses any horses or coaches. Since September 2007, three holiday homes on the top floor have provided a base from which to experience the wine-grower's work across the seasons. On the ground floor we have our own wine press, plus machines and equipment to manage the planting area.

In 1885 Curt Rudolph Steinbach purchased the property, which bears his name to this day. He is to be thanked for the present intimate nature of the whole Haus Steinbach estate, as in 1898 he came to an agreement with neighbours and the municipality to have what is now Bennostraße pass by the property.
